College Ceremonies & Receptions

College Events | Military Commissioning | Tips & FAQ | Diplomas

In addition to University Commencement (for all colleges & degrees), colleges have their own smaller events planned for Commencement Weekend. Families should plan to attend their student's college event as well as the University Commencement Ceremony. College events are smaller and may include students crossing stage for individual recognition, unlike the large university ceremony.

Diplomas are mailed to graduates, not distributed at Commencement events.

A campus map with bus stops noted for SUNDAY AFTERNOON college event locations will be posted on our Maps page once it's finalized in April.

College & Department Events

Below are college event schedules that college/department event planners have shared with the Commencement Office. For questions about these specific events, please contact the college or department directly.

Please Note: Event information below is from 2017, just to give an idea of what to expect (few change from year to year). College event schedules for 2018 will NOT be confirmed by event planners and posted here until January/February. For questions in the meantime, feel free to contact the appropriate event planner listed. Thanks!

Helpful Tips & College Events FAQ

What should guests know?
Please make sure everyone in your party knows the student's college & department so they can look up the event location or ask for directions.

Will my graduate escort me to the college event?
No. Graduates exit the stadium differently than guests, so plan to meet your graduate at the college/department event.

How are college events different than Commencement?
University Commencement is attended by all degree candidates from all colleges within the university. Degrees are conferred en masse at Commencement; students do not cross stage at Commencement.

Where do graduates get diplomas?
Diplomas are mailed to graduates, not distributed at Commencement events.

What are college events?
These are smaller events for students of a particular college or department, rather than the entire university. Event details vary, but may include individual recognition (students cross stage, name is read aloud), speeches, and/or a reception.

Who do I call with questions about a college event?
Contact the event planner listed on the college ceremony chart.

How do I get to the college event?
Plan to walk or ride a bus to the bus stop closest to the event location. Guests using the Yellow Plan for accessibility will not have bus service, but will walk/wheel or drive instead.

How do I know which bus stop is closest to my event?
On Commencement day, a campus map noting Sunday afternoon event locations and bus stops will be included in the Commencement Program handed out at the stadium. The map will also be posted on our Maps page, once it's finalized in April.

How do mobility-impaired guests get to college events?
Instructions are outlined in a letter mailed with accessibility permits. In general, Blue Plan guests will walk to certain locations, or ride a bus to others. Yellow Plan guests will walk/wheel to certain locations, or follow turn-by-turn directions to drop off their family member near other locations then search for a place to park.

What if my college/department doesn't have an event planned for Sunday?
Some colleges and departments have events on Friday or Saturday, rather than Sunday. Students and families who do not have a college/department event to attend on Sunday afternoon will be finished with weekend events when the Commencement Ceremony ends at noon. Students should return their cap & gown at one of the return locations on campus (Teagle Hall, Cornell Store, A-Lot, B-Lot) by 5:00pm.

When do Commencement Weekend events end?
Nearly all campus events have finished by 3:30pm Sunday, and campus roads re-open at 4:00pm. If a student's college or department does not have an event planned for Sunday afternoon, those students & families will be finished with weekend events when the University Commencement Ceremony ends at noon on Sunday.
