To help you prepare for your special weekend, please read this page of important information, links, and deadlines.
On Commencement morning, arrive on the Arts Quad at 9:15am, wearing cap & gown, to assemble with your college for the procession to Schoellkopf. No alcohol, glass bottles, or pets. Enjoy the festive weekend, and congratulations on your achievements!
The cap & gown company will come to campus the week of Commencement to distribute all caps & gowns at Teagle Hall. You will pick up your outfit at that time, then return items on campus by 5:00pm Commencement Day. All information, instructions, and ordering links are posted on the cap & gown page.
Assemble with your conferring college for the procession to Schoellkopf Field. Line up four across. Ushers will assist in organizing the procession lineup. Your family should be seated at the stadium by this time, not on the Arts Quad with you.
The academic procession will move counterclockwise around the Arts Quad and proceed to Schoellkopf Field. The university marshal will lead the procession past the presidential reviewing party on Olin Terrace and continue on to Schoellkopf Field
Upon arrival at the stadium, ushers will direct you to seats on Schoellkopf Field. Rapid movement is essential, with no stops or gaps in the procession. You will be seated with your conferring college, just as you assembled and processed to the stadium.
Following the university president’s speech, each college will be asked to rise at appropriate times for degree conferral. At the conclusion of the ceremony, please remain standing as the president, college deans, trustees, administrators, and the faculty exit from Schoellkopf Field. Please refrain from throwing your caps, as the hard edges can be dangerous and cause injury.
You will exit at field level while your family exits at other locations. Due to large crowds leaving the stadium all at once, plan to meet your family at your next event.
Make sure everyone in your party knows your college and department so they can look up your event in the Commencement Program and meet you at the correct location.
Commencement Packets for families are mailed in February to the home address you provide in StudentCenter. Commencement 2019 packets are mailed to families of undergraduates with degree dates of May 2019, December 2018, and August 2018.
Commencement Packets are not mailed to parents of graduate students. Follow instructions from the Graduate School and/or your college or field to obtain a Commencement Packet at the appropriate office, after March 1st.

Walking Early: Candidates for future degrees (August 2019, December 2019) who wish to “walk early” may also participate in the 2019 Commencement. The Commencement Office does not need to be notified of your plans to walk early. However, you will need to order cap & gown to wear in the ceremony. If you want to walk early at your college event, please check directly with the appropriate event planner.
You and your family will have at least two celebratory events to attend during Commencement Weekend: Commencement and your college or department event. Many families like to also attend Senior Convocation, an optional event on Saturday.
Commencement is the university ceremony for all graduate and undergraduate degrees in all colleges. This large ceremony takes place Sunday morning at Schoellkopf Stadium. Wearing cap & gown, you will assemble on the Arts Quad at 9:15am to march with your college in the academic procession to Schoellkopf, then rise with your college for degree conferral during the ceremony. You will not cross the stage for individual recognition at this ceremony.
College events take place throughout the weekend, and vary from recognition ceremonies to informal receptions. Be sure everyone in your party knows your college and department, as well as the date, time, and location of your specific event so they may plan accordingly to meet you there. You and your family don’t want to miss your college or department event, especially if it offers individual recognition.
Senior Class Convocation takes place 12:30-1:30pm on Saturday, the day before graduation. You and your family are welcome to attend this optional event at Schoellkopf Stadium, where an invited guest speaker will address students, families, and guests. This event is not a recognition ceremony, so you will sit in the audience with your family and not wear cap & gown. There are no admission tickets or guest limit for this outdoor event. However, if Convocation is moved indoors due to weather, then a limited number of Convocation Inclement Weather e-Tickets (that you reserve/print in May) will be required for admission to the indoor location.
