Be prepared for all types of weather with sunblock, umbrella, coats and hats, etc. Many ceremonies will remain outdoors even if hot, cold, or rainy.
Dress per your comfort level for the events you plan to attend, business-casual is common.
Wear comfortable walking shoes for Cornell’s hills! Bring bandaids for blisters.
Please consider bringing a wheelchair or transport chair for the comfort and safety of guests with mobility or stamina challenges. If you’re bringing a wheelchair, you’ll need our Yellow Accessibility Plan for appropriate seating & parking access.
Make sure everyone in your party knows the student’s college and department. Your graduate will not always be with you or reachable by phone, so you need the information in order to find your student’s college event (day, time, location, bus stop) or to ask for directions. You’d be surprised how easily family members, especially grandparents without a phone, get separated from the group and need to know where to meet their family. Some parents give every family member a card that has the student’s college & department written down in case phone batteries deplete, WiFi is unreliable, or cell towers are overloaded. This is especially helpful for lost family members who do not speak fluent English, as they can show the card for help.
Weekend events are usually finished by 3:30pm Sunday.
Graduates must return cap & gown on campus by 5:00pm Sunday.
No alcohol, glass bottles, or pets allowed at Schoellkopf Stadium.
The safety and security of everyone on campus is of great importance to Cornell University, so please review safety and security protocols for Commencement Weekend. Cornell reserves the right to search persons and property.
Also, to receive emergency notifications during your visit please text the following: CornellVisitor to 226787 and you will be set up to receive alert messages.
Order formal customized graduation announcements from Balfour (link updated in early February) to inform family and friends of accomplishments. Balfour also offers thank you notes, etiquette seals, custom seal note cards, return address labels, and certificates of appreciation. For questions regarding specific degree information to print on customized announcements, please contact the student’s college registrar.
The Cornell Store works with Balfour to provide Cornell rings in a variety of styles for men and women.
