Ph.D. Recognition Event

Ph.D. Special Recognition Event at Barton Hall
Saturday, May 23, 2009, 5:00–6:30 p.m.

On Saturday, May 23, a special recognition event will be held in Barton Hall at 5:00 p.m. for all Ph.D. candidates to be individually recognized. Families, friends, and faculty members are invited to attend this event. Cap, tassel, hood, and gown must be worn for this event. A reception at Barton Hall for all Ph.D. candidates and their family and friends will follow.

All candidates are asked to arrive at Barton Hall by 4:15 p.m. to register and line up for the procession at 5:00 p.m. Please report to one of five tables (alphabetic by last name) that will be along the curtain on the Teagle Hall side of Barton. (Refer to the map in your Commencement Information packet.) Ushers and graduate school staff will be there to assist. At 5:00 p.m. a formal procession will begin of candidates, faculty, trustees, Graduate School Dean, and the University President.

RSVP

An RSVP is required by May 18, 2009, by all Ph.D. candidates participating in this event. You must register using the on-line RSVP form.

Number of Guests and Tickets

There is no limit to the number of guests that can attend. There are no tickets for this event.

Faculty Invitation

Candidates are encouraged to invite special committee faculty members to this event. Formal invitations will be included in your commencement packet from the Graduate School for you to give to your faculty members. Faculty dressed in regalia will process to the seating area in front of the stage.

Photographs

Professional photographs will be taken of you shaking hands with President Skorton on the stage. A proof for you to review will be sent to you within approximately 30 days. You have the option to purchase additional photographs. Chappell Graduation Images: 800-247-3435.

Mobility Impaired Guests

Guests who cannot maneuver the stairs in Barton Hall on the Statler Hall side are encouraged to enter from the Teagle Hall side of the building. There will be a special seating area for guests using wheelchairs and walkers.

Campus Buses

The campus buses will be available on Saturday and Sunday from all regular bus stops on campus.

Cap and Gown Information

Caps, tassels, hoods, and gowns may be rented by filling out the on-line order form at http://www.herff-jones.com/college/graduation. The rental fee is $57.08 Orders must be received by April 15.

After April 15th caps and gowns will be available at the distribution center in Teagle Hall beginning on Wednesday, May 20, through Saturday, May 23, from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm. Although sizes cannot be guaranteed we will have something available for you. The late payment fee is $10, in addition to the rental fee of $57.08. Cash only.

Ph.D. degree candidates and faculty who wish to purchase a tassel, cap, gown, and hood must order by March 10, 2009 to allow 8 weeks for delivery. Complete online form at: http://www.herff-jones.com/college/cornell. Orders must be received by April 15. To insure delivery of your newly purchased regalia, please be prepared to provide the delivery address of where you will be during the immediate ten days before May 24, 2009.

Commencement Ceremony, Sunday May 24, 2009, 11:00 a.m.- Noon

On Sunday, May 24, Ph.D. candidates are expected to participate in the university-wide Commencement ceremony. At 9:15 a.m. students must gather on the Arts Quad in cap, tassel, hood, and gown, and process into Schoellkopf Stadium. The Ph.D. degrees will be conferred by the President at this time. Following the Schoellkopf ceremony, college ceremonies and receptions are held for graduates and their families at various college locations.

Diploma Distribution

Graduates who complete all degree requirements by March 5 may receive their diplomas following the University Ceremony. These will be available at the college ceremonies. All other diplomas will be mailed 12-16 weeks after the conferral date, to the home address listed in Just the Facts.
