Ceremony Instructions

All Degree Candidates

Pet Policy: Please be aware that Cornell University has a pet policy that will be enforced for Schoellkopf Field as well as the stadium seating areas. Therefore, please do not bring your pet for the procession or to the stadium.

9:15am - Students assemble on the Arts Quad for the procession.

The class division (collge banner bearers, academic deans, degree marshals, college symbol banner bearers, and degree candidates) will assemble on the Arts Quad at the appropriate points, as designated by signs. Download the Arts Quad Map:

All groups should line up and march four abreast. Ushers and marshals will assist in organizing the procession lineup.

Note: PhD and Master candidates line up at PhD and Master signs, NOT with the undergraduate colleges.

The cap of the academic costume is worn with the tassel on the right for undergraduates and on the left for graduate degree candidates.

9:40am - The procession begins.

The academic procession will move counterclockwise around the Arts Quad and proceed to Schoellkopf Stadium. Refer to the order of movement below.

Each school or college is led by its Name Banner, followed by the Academic Dean, Degree Marshals, Symbol Banner, and degree candidates, in that order.

9:45-11:00am - The procession route.

The procession will pass the presidential reviewing party on Olin Terrace. Members of the faculty will be standing on both sides of the sidewalk between Olin Library and Sage Chapel. The procession will then pass between the ranks of the faculty and continue to the intersection of Tower Road and East Avenue. It will continue down East Avenue to the Statler Plaza, down Vet Drive to Campus Road, and into Schoellkopf Stadium.

Upon arrival at the stadium, ushers will direct candidates to seats on Schoellkopf Field. Rapid movement is essential.

11:00am-Noon - The Commencement Ceremony.

The university marshal will ask each college to rise at appropriate times during the ceremony. Please remain standing until given the signal to be seated. When the president announces the degree is conferred, shift your tassel to the left.

Because the hard edges of the caps can be dangerous and cause serious injury, please refrain from throwing the caps.

At the conclusion of the ceremony, please remain standing as the president, the college deans, the trustees, the administrative staff, and the faculty exit from Schoellkopf Field.

Faculty Division

9:15am - The procession assembles on the Arts Quad.

The faculty including emeritus professors, will assemble on the sidewalk at the southeast corner of Morrill Hall.

9:40am - The procession begins.

The university marshal, the dean of the faculty, and the faculty marshals will lead the faculty past the presidential reviewing party to the sidewalk immediately south of Olin Library and into the Day Hall parking lot. The group will divide and line both sides of the sidewalk to allow the procession to pass between the two lines.

9:45-11:00am - The procession route.

After the class division and the administrative staff have proceeded, the faculty rejoin the procession and proceed to Schoellkopf Stadium. Upon reaching the stadium, ushers and faculty marshals will direct faculty down the center aisle unless congestion requires another route.

11:00am-Noon - The Commencement Ceremony.

At the conclusion of the ceremony, the president, the college deans, the trustees, the administrative staff, and the faculty exit in that order using the center aisle.

Administrative Staff Division

9:15am - The procession assembles on the Arts Quad.

The administrative staff division, headed by the provost and two faculty marshals, will assemble in front of the main entrance to Olin Library.

9:40am - The procession begins.

9:45-11:00am - The procession route.

When the last group of candidates (Arts) passes the presidential reviewing stand, join the procession. The staff will be followed by the faculty, trustees, mace bearer and president. Upon reaching the stadium, ushers will guide the group down the center aisle to seats at the rear of the stage. Individual seats are not assigned.

11:00am-Noon - The Commencement Ceremony.

At the conclusion of the ceremony, the president, the college deans, the trustees, the administrative staff, and the faculty exit in that order using the center aisle.

Trustees

9:15am - The procession assembles on the Arts Quad.

The trustees, headed by the chairman and vice chairmen of the board and two faculty marshals, will assemble on the west end of Olin Library terrace to review the procession.

9:40am - The procession begins.

The trustees will review the procession in its entirety.

9:45-11:00am - The procession route.

The trustees will immediately follow the faculty members and precede the mace bearer and president. Upon reaching the stadium, ushers will guide the group down the center aisle to seats on the stage. Individual seats are not assigned.

11:00 a.m.-Noon, The Commencement Ceremony.

At the conclusion of the ceremony, the president, college deans, trustees, administrative staff, and faculty exit, in that order, using the center aisle.

President and Mace Bearer

9:30am - The procession assembles on the Arts Quad.

The mace bearer and president will assemble along the railing, on the west end of Olin Library terrace, to observe the procession.

9:45-11:00am - The procession route.

The mace bearer and president will follow the trustees in the procession to the stadium. Upon announcement by the master of ceremonies, the university marshal will lead the mace bearer and president onto the field and down the center aisle to seats in the front row of the stage.

11:00am-Noon - The Commencement Ceremony.

The university marshal, president, and mace bearer will lead the recession down the center aisle.
